About MMDL

The Medical Media and Design Laboratory at Imperial College London was formed to undertake development and research in Virtual Worlds. It is part of the Division of Surgery, which is world renowned for its pioneering work on surgical skills through simulation, virtual reality, telemedicine and robotic surgery.

Projects:

We develop interactive clinical environments for a wide range of advanced applications in Second Life and compatible platforms. We also manage events and support a growing community of healthcare innovators. We have been active in Second Life for over 6 years and have undertaken several ground-breaking projects including:

Enabling NHS staff and medical trainees to practise managing virtual patients and clinical emergencies in a safe environment. **awarded a Linden Prize Honorable Mention.

Map_symbol_info_point_02Help healthcare staff gain properly informed consent from patients with learning disability. A collaboration with University of Brighton, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Grace Eyre Foundation.

Help providers and patients to visualise and explore future healthcare delivery scenarios. The public engagement project known as “Second Health” incorporates a virtual hospital (polyclinic) and a series of ‘machinima’ documentary films to describe a vision for future healthcare in London. **has received over 32,000 visits; time spent per visitor averages over 30 mins.

Our virtual conference centre enables health staff from around the UK and Internationally to participate in International Clinical Summit and UK National Health Service meetings, such as those of the NHS Confederation.
